The Power of Unplugging: Building a Conscious Lifestyle in a Connected World

For as long as I can remember, television has only ever been an evening activity for me. Even as a child, I rarely watched during the day. Now, I limit my screen time and never touch the TV in hotels or while traveling. To me, turning on the screen during daylight hours feels like a missed opportunity to experience the world around me.

Choosing to embrace a conscious lifestyle has shaped how I experience life intentionally, without constant background noise. I only watch films or documentaries, never using TV as filler, and this intentional approach has made unplugging a natural (and surprisingly transformative!) part of my routine. Today I’m excited to share how a technology detox has benefited me and what it might offer you, too.

The Summer I Went TV-Free and Never Looked Back

It all started with diving (yes, deep sea diving!). In May 2021, I left for five weeks and spent my days immersed in the depths of the sea. When I returned, I still felt so connected to that underwater world that I only felt at ease in nature (especially in the forest). I didn’t want anything pulling my attention away from those memories of the ocean and the natural world. Without really planning to, I stopped turning on the TV and focused on my conscious lifestyle instead.

After what turned out to be my first (almost accidental) TV-free summer, I mentioned it casually in conversation. The person I was talking to stopped, looked me straight in the eye, and said, “You deserve a medal for that!” The sincerity of that moment really stayed with me. It made me realize that something I hadn’t thought much about was actually a meaningful choice.  That was four years ago, and I’ve continued my TV-free summers ever since (now well beyond summer). I don’t talk about my digital detox often, mostly just with my husband and sometimes with my father when we see each other. (He always tells me it’s something to be proud of.) But I figured, since it’s something that’s had such a positive impact on my life, it was time to share it with you too!

6 Digital Detox Benefits I’ve Experienced

So, what are the benefits of unplugging from technology? Whether you take a short break or, like me, step away from screens for months at a time, amazing things happen. Here are some of the ways disconnecting has positively impacted my life (and may do the same for yours):

  • Stronger willpower and character – following through on a decision that aligns with my values and feeling grounded in that choice
  • Deeper connection with myself – experiencing fewer distractions, more presence, and a stronger connection to my conscious lifestyle
  • Freedom from media influence – feeling less affected by advertising, product placements, and unrealistic portrayals of women
  • Clearer perspective on relationships – seeing connections more honestly, without distortion or romanticization
  • Peace of mind – stepping away from violent, negative, and emotionally draining content
  • Pure gain, no loss – soaking in very moment away from a screen creating and adding more value to my life.

Want to feel all the benefits of those unplugged hours? I’ll share my digital detox how to roadmap.

Gentle Tips for Your Own Technology Detox

If you’ve ever wondered what it might be like to take a tech break from screens, there are simple ways to begin without it feeling overwhelming. You don’t need a perfect plan or a complete life overhaul. Even small, intentional steps can bring a surprising sense of calm when unplugging from the world.

Here are some digital detox tips to get started:

Start Small and Be Specific

Try one TV-free evening per week or a screen-free weekend each month. Defined, manageable boundaries feel easier to maintain than vague intentions. Starting with something achievable allows you to adjust naturally without feeling deprived. Every step toward improvement is worth its weight in gold. How fast you get there is secondary (if not insignificant!).

Replace Rather Than Remove

Instead of just turning off a screen, fill the time with something nourishing. For me, that’s lighting candles, listening to an audiobook, meditating, or spending time outdoors (nothing beats looking at the starry sky from my home in the Swiss mountains). These small rituals make the unplugging feel like a win, not a sacrifice.

Pay Attention to Your Natural Rhythm

Screens tend to keep us awake longer than our bodies want, especially with the blue light. I would go to bed much later than I should have when watching a Netflix series. After unplugging from technology, especially in the evenings, you’ll notice when you truly feel tired and ready to rest. Honoring your natural rhythm is essential to improving your sleep and overall well-being.

Choose Clarity Over Compromise

For some, “just a little” TV or internet time creates more inner negotiation than peace. A straightforward yes-or-no approach can be surprisingly freeing and easier to keep (it’s what works best for me, personally!). Notice which structure feels most supportive for you and stick with it.

Trust The Strength That Grows from Discomfort

Making any change in habit can feel unfamiliar or slightly uncomfortable at first. That feeling is often a sign that inner resilience is forming. Over time, it becomes a confidence that carries into many other areas of life.

You Don’t Need to Commit to Forever

Pay attention to how you feel when you start your digital detox. Less really is more, and it can give you exactly what you didn’t even realize you were missing. I switch off in May and don’t switch on until December (I still haven’t switched back on yet!). See what works best for you and your lifestyle.

Turn Inward by Unplugging from Technology

Through my annual fasting retreats, I’ve grown familiar with the power of letting go. Each time we step away from something that no longer serves us, whether it’s endless TV, scrolling through social media, or constant digital noise, we discover unexpected clarity within ourselves. We don’t immediately know what to do with this newfound space or energy after a technology detox. It simply becomes part of who we are, shaping us until its value becomes clear.
