The Best Places for Solo Travel in Europe in 2023

I may be biased, but I truly feel that being able to travel solo in Europe is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. It’s so freeing and exhilarating, and there’s nowhere else in the world truly like it.

If you’re looking for good solo travel destinations for a 2023 Euro trip, you’re in the right place!

Best Places to Solo Travel in Europe

Traveling solo is one of my favorite ways to embrace the unknown. But with over 40 countries to choose from, how do you narrow down the best places for solo travel?

Let’s get into some of the best places to solo travel in Europe, along with my top travel solo tips and a few inspiring travel solo quotes to jumpstart your journey.

Munich, Germany

Munich is one of the best places for solo travel as it’s incredibly safe and filled with plenty of exciting activities to fill your itinerary with. The city is easily accessible by walking or biking as you explore this metropolitan town with plenty of green spaces. Enjoy the natural beauty of Englischer Garten and The River Isar, then find your way to Marienplatz to take in the city’s rich history. I’m a bit biased as Munich was my home for MANY years, so if you have any questions while planning your solo trip to Munich, just drop me a DM!

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Amsterdam is full of surprises and a very popular destination to travel solo in Europe. Winding canals and sweeping bridges connect this unique city with so many bicycles that they outnumber people! Enjoy over 50 museums as you take in the bountiful history, art, and culture with spots like the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Anne Frank House.

Sofia, Bulgaria

When it comes to narrowing down the best places for solo travel, Sofia, Bulgaria, is a magical and historic city with a calm and authentic feel. This city is great for exploring by foot and people-watching along the strips of small food stores and local shops. By far, the most impressive building in Sofia has to be The Alexander Nevski Cathedral, located in the center of Bulgaria’s capital city. Another must-see is The Church of Sveti Sedmochislenitsi surrounded by a quaint city park.

Kraków, Poland

Kraków is another perfect spot to travel solo in Europe as it has a compact city center that’s easily walkable. Take in the old-world architecture and wander the streets gleaming with a rich history. Get your steps in by climbing the stairs of St. Mary’s Basilica Tower for a sweeping city view overlooking the main square. Admire the city’s street art throughout quaint neighborhoods, and don’t forget to add Wawel castle to your list.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen is another great city for solo travelers as it’s safe and easy to get around by public transport or walking. There are endless restaurants, bars, cafés, and activities for travelers. This city has a local feel rather than being super touristy, with small cobblestone streets and colorful houses (perfect to Instagram and share!). Don’t miss the famous Little Mermaid Statue and the gorgeously vibrant Nyhavn harbor.

Copenhagen is one of my favorite capitals in Europe. I am a big fan of Scandinavia in general!

My Top Travel Solo Tips

Have you decided which one of the best places to solo travel in Europe you’d like to visit? It’s okay if you’re not sure yet (or want to go to them all!)

Once you’ve chosen your destination, the next step is to prepare for the adventure ahead both physically and mentally (and follow my travel solo tips to ensure the best trip experience possible)!

Plan Your Itinerary as YOU See Fit

When traveling on your own, you can do whatever you want, whenever you want. You can go places to meet people or you can spend all the time in the world with yourself. (Introverted solo travelers rejoice!) Make a list of all the things you want to do and see on your trip and do them, without anyone telling you otherwise.

Always Trust Your Intuition

This is one of the most important travel solo tips to keep in mind if you’re traveling solo as a female. For safety reasons, if something feels off, listen to your gut! Take a taxi if you’re feeling uncomfortable navigating public transportation. Make sure to read the reviews on the hotels and neighborhoods you’re staying in before booking, so you choose somewhere you feel safe and comfortable.

It’s Ok To Need a Dose of Others

Just because you want to explore the best places for solo travel, doesn’t mean you have to be alone the entire time! Just because you’re traveling solo, doesn’t mean you can’t also be with others. For example, many cities offer free group walking tours within your destination. These are great because they’ll give you a much better idea of the layout of the city right away, and also allow you to meet others just arriving on their adventure as well. If you’re not up for a group activity, yet still yearn for a bit of socialization, you can also simply book yourself a few dining reservations at popular local spots and grab a seat at the bar. That buzzing restaurant may be just the dose of socialization you need before heading off on another solo excursion.
